2. Can I legally remove the catalytic converter from my vehicle?

In the UK there is, currently, no requirement for a vehicle to be fitted with a catalytic converter. However the emissions must remain within the limits set for the type and age of vehicle.

3. I've heard I can reduce my running costs on LPG. How much can I save, and what will it cost?

At the time of writing, in the UK, unleaded petrol is typically 78p a litre and LPG is 38p a litre. This is around half the price. Your saving will be slightly less than that, because you will use slightly more LPG - perhaps as much as 20% more. So, expect to save around 40% of your fuel bill. Conversions start at around GBP 400 for a DIY install of a carburetted vehicle up to GBP 2,500 for a twin tank, professionally installed conversion of a 38A Range Rover including all the electronics and engine rechipping. 4. Where in the UK can I insure my Land Rover?

CIS (Co-Operative Insurance) and NFU Mutual (National Farmer's Union) are widely regarded as the two of the better insurers for Land Rover owners.

5. What are wading plugs and when should I use them?

They are screw-in plugs fitted to some (but not all) Land Rovers, usually at the base of the clutch bell-housing and the timing cover (if it's a belt rather than chain). These are areas that need to stay oil free (hence a drain hole in case a seal leaks) but also need to remain water free so the vehicle comes with plugs to put in before you go into deep water (anything deep enough that it might reach the level of the drain hole) and remove as soon as possible after coming out of the water.

10. What does a standard fitment diff lock do?

On a Land Rover vehicle (that is fitted with a standard diff lock), you have 3 diffs, one in each axle and one in between. These allow transmission of drive at different speeds to all 4 wheels on the road, which you need. But a free diff sends all the power to a wheel with no grip, resulting in a lack of progress. The standard diff lock, locks the inter-axle diff so that it splits the power equally between front and rear axles. If a back wheel loses grip, half the drive still goes to the front axle. The 2-wheels-spinning scenario happens when one front wheel and one back wheel have no grip. This most often happens if you drop one side of the vehicle into a deep ditch, or if you get diagonally opposite corners on lumps, known as cross-axled. If you add a locking diff in the rear axle, then 3 wheels are guaranteed to turn.

11. Why is my diff oil always over full ?

Why is my diff oil always over full? The axle is quite warm after a run, the oil/air in there expands, when it is dunked in cold water the oil/air cools down, the negative pressure caused sucks in water through the breather. Along comes our "home mechanic" and checks the diff level guess what, over full, probably more water than oil.!!! The various remedies are:

12. Why do I get oil leaking onto the outside of my wheels ?

The small brass breather on the front and rear axles is very prone to blockage, pressure caused by the axle warming up causes by pass at the seals, also leaks at the diff pinion flange seal.

13. How can I rebuild a propshaft?

If it's just UJs, then they're not that hard. You need a decent pair of circlip pliers and an engineer's vice which opens to about 9".

You then want 2 sockets, one of which fits in side the hole in the yoke (this is normally about 19mm) and one that fits over the bearing, i.e. one where the hole in the middle is slightly bigger than the hole in the yoke. I think that's 30mm, but not sure. Having removed the circlips, you line the yoke up across the vice with the 2 sockets on opposite sides, holding he shaft with your third hand and turning the vice handle with your 4th (an assistant comes in handy).

Having lined it all up, wind the vice in to push the whole cross-piece and bearing across until the other 2 arms of the cross hit the yoke, whereupon you can grip the now-protruding bearing in the vice (not too hard) and pull the shaft off it.

Using some small spacer, do the same to push the other bearing out. The spider will then come free from the yoke.

Refitting is the reverse of removal

But... be careful pushing the bearings in. fit one circlip, push the whole lot across until the bearing is tight against the clip, then push the other bearing in very carefully so that it *just* clears the circlip groove. push it too far and it might get tight.
